Pruning vines

Around the Island

Pruning vines

On such a nice February day we went for a walk around the neighborhood at Fykia and visited Giorgos and Liliana at the Moraitico winery. February is the month of pruning the vines, so even though the landscape seems a little bit dry, there is a lot of activity going on.

Giorgos started his engagement with wine at an early age with his father and he opened his own winery in 2000. His winery is a small one and here everything is done by hand. His vines are located around the northern part of the island, close to Naoussa, and they are organic.

Giorgos uses four different local varieties of grapes, Monemvasia, Mandilaria, Mavrotragano and Malagouzia and he produces around 50.000 bottles of white, rosé, sparkling rosé and red wine per year.

It was definitely enjoyable meeting the man behind the really good locally produced, organic wines and really interesting getting a closer look at his winery!
